My cycling year has been a disaster, due mostly to my spending the 1st quarter running, followed by training for our Grand Canyon Hike, followed by a hectic travel schedule. I’ve just not been able to get my cycling legs under me and accomplish anything worthwhile. And last week was the final straw. I had to host a meeting of software architects from another software company recently acquired by our parent company. Just trying to do my normal job plus host this workshop actually had me driving the car to work last week. Oh, the horror! I freely admit defeat and I’m moving up the start of my marathon training by a week. My training officially begins today, August 4, although I’ve run the past two days to build into it.
What follows is my Fatass-to-Marathon-Badass Training Program (pat. pend.), which is an adaptation of Hal Higdon’s Intermediate 1 Training Guide. As you can see, this program is 19 weeks leading up to a marathon on December 13, 2014, specifically the Rocket City Marathon.

During 100 Milevember (last year) and my training for the Grand Canyon Backpacking Tour, I was running at lunch time every day with the younger guys in my department. We have a nice gym where we can change clothes and shower afterwards. The downside is that it is impossible to cool off quickly here in Alabama in the summer so, even after a shower, you’re going back to work sweating. I’m considering doing my running in the early mornings, but that has challenges as well since I need to interface with development teams in India during the short time in our morning that overlaps with their day. I guess yet another option is to run after work either before I cycle home or as soon as I get home. I’m not sure what I’ll do. I guess I’ll try a bit of each and see how I get on this time.
